Six Men's and Three Women's Basketball Teams to Compete at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in September
At the press conference, Mr. Mike Heung, head coach of the Hong Kong Men's A1 Division South China Athletic Association Basketball Team and Executive Chairman of the Junior Basketball Association, announced the six men's teams participating in the tournament. In addition to the South China Athletic Association Basketball Team, the other five teams come from various regions: the Thailand National Team, the Jilin Northeast Tigers Basketball Club from the Chinese CBA, the Anyang KGC Basketball Team from Korea, the Serbian powerhouse KK Petrovgrad Zrenjanin, and the P. League+ team Taoyuan Pilots from Taiwan. The competition promises to generate much excitement with these strong matchups. The tournament will be divided into two groups of three teams each, with group stage eliminations leading to the top two teams from each group competing for the championship, and the second-place teams from each group competing for third place.
With growing public awareness of gender equality and the development of female athletes, women's basketball has gained more exposure and support globally. The "Hong Kong China International Basketball Tournament 2024" will also feature a women's round-robin competition, inviting the Hong Kong Women's A Division League champions, the Fujian Women's Basketball Team, the Basket Almeda Women's Team from Spain (5th place in the 2022-2023 league), and the Thailand National Women's Team to showcase their skills.
In his speech at the event, Mr. Leung Kang-ying, Vice Chairman of the Basketball Association of Hong Kong , China, emphasized the association's commitment to promoting local basketball development. He noted that the number of basketball participants in Hong Kong has been increasing in recent years, and the association is pleased to see various types of basketball events taking place in Hong Kong. He believes that inviting professional teams from different parts of the world, many of which are making their debut in Hong Kong, will provide fans with a visual feast. Mr. Leung also mentioned that in addition to the games, the tournament will actively organize a series of community activities, which will play a positive role in promoting local basketball development and training young athletes.
